Oakwood Enrichment Academy, LLC
Enrichment Subjects
We focus on subjects that are best learned collaboratively. History forms the backbone of our program, as students find themselves immersed in a wide range of art, science and storytelling lessons which come together to help us understand more about the world beyond our current time and place.

History
Each class spends the whole year immersed in a particular time period in history, weaving in and out of various regions and cultures of that time frame. We share a tapestry of beautifully illustrated nonfiction stories, historical fiction literature, interactive note-booking, and hands-on arts and crafts.

Oakwood follows a non-sectarian approach, providing an overview of a broad range of world historical figures, cultures and religions, and endeavoring to include often-overlooked figures in history, such as women and non-western scientists.

We embrace the opportunity for homeschooling families to deep-dive into their own religious and cultural history at home, and support the important role that faith plays in many families' lives. We send sensitive topics home for discussion and study, so that families have a chance to provide context and explain their cultural viewpoint.
Science
We believe that for science to "stick" it has to feel relevant. All of our science topics, while meeting or exceeding NGSS standards, are part of the larger "Great Story" of how people lived their lives throughout history, seeking solutions to their pressing questions and problems, and building on the knowledge of those who came before.

Oakwood learners' imaginations are fired up by exploring with exciting hands-on materials, spending time in the outdoors, and asking questions like "How does that work?" and "What will happen if...," within the living context of the historical period in which they are immersed.

American Sign Language
Learning a new language enhances both linguistic and social skills, especially when it is taught the Oakwood way: through games and real conversation.
ASL is a beautiful and useful language for communicating with the over half-million people who speak it as a native language in the US.

As a living language, ASL is best taught by a Deaf native speaker, and we are lucky to have such an instructor as a founding member of our staff.

Music
Kristina Prozesky, our program founder, is a certified Kodaly and Orff instructor, as well as a sought-after private teacher of vocal technique.

Oakwood students explore sung music through folk songs from all continents, and gain exposure to a wide range of world languages.

Students use pitched and un-pitched instruments, as well as "Do-Re-Mi" hand signs to absorb the elements of pitch and rhythm, while creating fun and satisfying music.

Theatre Arts
Every spring we put on a play, which brings together elements of our music, history, and art studies. We have adopted "Playing with Plays" scripts as our theatre curriculum, which condense Shakespeare and other great works of literature into funny and accessible plays that have our audiences roaring with laughter.

Theater often brings even shy students out of their shell (especially when it's this fun!), but we also have backstage opportunities for those who feel their talents shine best there!

Recess!
Even with all the academic rigor that we fit into an Oakwood day, we still make time for unstructured play, and we value the importance of fresh air, sunshine, dirt.

During outdoor recess, students can socialize under a tree, play ball in our gaga pit, play tag on the grass, climb up into our big, friendly oak, spin on the tree swing, garden, or hang out with our tortoise, Spud.

Our thriving organic vegetable garden offers opportunities to dig, plant, taste, smell, weed, water, hunt for bugs, feed the worms, pretend, or just sit and think.

Unstructured indoor time might include a choice of handwork with wool or beeswax, reading from our richly furnished library, solving brain-teasers, playing chess, or repeating an art, history, or science activity from the shelf.

Oakwood is a place where kids have the space and support to get the most out of their world!
